Jesus' instructively prayed, "Our Father in heaven..." (Matthew 6:9) and God the Father's parental relationship with Christians is described throughout the New Testament (John 1:12–13; Romans 1:7; 15:6; 1 Cor 1:3; 2 Cor 1:3 ; 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3; Colossians 1:12; Ephesians 5:20; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 4:6; 1 Peter 1:3-4 ; 1 John 3:1). However, fatherhood—and even attributes of motherhood—are ways that the Old Testament describes God as well. It is reflected in God's relationship with creation, generally, with Israel, specifically, and even individuals who enjoy a personal relationship with him (Exodus 4:22-23; Deuteronomy 1:31; 8:5 ; 14:1; 32:6; Isaiah 63:16; 64:8; Jeremiah 3:4; 3:19 ; 31:9; 2:10; 2 Samuel 7:14; 1 Chronicles 17:13; 22:10; 28:6; Psalm 68:5; 89:26; Psalm 103:13; Jeremiah 3:22 ; 31:20; Hosea 11:1-4; Malachi 1:6).
