Jonah 2

Jonah’s Prayer

¹Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish: ^a

²I called to the Lord in my distress, ^b

and he answered me.

I cried out for help from deep inside ^c Sheol; ^d

you heard my voice. ^e

³When you threw me into the depths, ^f

into the heart of the seas, ^g

the current ^h overcame me.

All your breakers and your billows swept over me. ⁱ

⁴And I said, “I have been banished ^j

from your sight, ^k

yet I will look ^l once more

toward your holy temple.” ^m

⁵The water engulfed me up to the neck; ⁿ,^o

the watery depths overcame me;

seaweed was wrapped around my head. ^p

⁶I sank to the foundations of the mountains, ^q

the earth’s gates shut behind me forever! ^r

Then you raised my life ^s from the Pit, Lord my God! ^t

⁷As my life was fading away, ^u

I remembered the Lord, ^v

and my prayer came to you, ^w

to your holy temple. ^x

⁸Those who cherish worthless idols ^y

abandon their faithful love, ^z

⁹but as for me, I will sacrifice ^aa to you

with a voice of thanksgiving. ^ab

I will fulfill ^ac what I have vowed.

Salvation ^ad belongs to the Lord. ^ae

¹⁰Then the Lord commanded the fish, ^af and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
